Welcome to episode 13 of my DJcity “Scratch Combo of the Month”. Coming to you from the home of DJcity – Los Angeles.
This month we combine a crab, 1 click flare and some transforms to create this funky syncopated combo. Try it out slowly to start with!
Learning the individual scratches that make up this combo first will definitely help. If you need help with that I recommend diving into my School of Scratch.
If you are a regular crossfader scratch DJ, I recommend learning the individual techniques listed in the breakdown first, then putting them all together using this video as a guide. You do not have to be a hamster / reverse crossfader style DJ to do this combo. It is for everyone! I have a guide to help regular scratch DJs learn with me here.
Have fun with it!
Instructions / Breakdown
Phrase 1
- Crab forward
- Reverse 1 click flare – end with fader closed
- Forward
- 2 reverse transforms
I repeat this pattern 2 times and on the 3rd repetition:
- Crab forward
- Reverse 1 click flare – end with fader closed
- Forward – 3 reverse transforms
- Forward – 3 reverse transforms
- Forward – 2 reverse transforms
Phrase 2
I then repeat this basic pattern twice more:
- Crab forward
- Reverse 1 click flare – end with fader closed
- Forward
- 2 reverse transforms
Then end on the 3rd repetition I do:
- Crab forward
- Reverse 1 click flare – end with fader closed
- A forward to reverse drag repeated 3 times.
I cycle through these 2 different phrases alternately to provide variation.
