How To Get Really Good At Scratching?

March 27, 2012

Many people ask me how they can get really good at scratching.

Some DJs might promise a secret in the form of a how to course or coaching you one on one. Useful I am sure. Necessary? Not really.

Let me save you some time and money.

The secret to becoming really great at scratching is really quite simple.

I’d go so far as to say I can summarise it into one word.

Are you ready?

PRACTICE.

Sorry to disappoint you. I am sure you waiting for something more profound.

There are various ways you can approach your scratch practice granted, but everything boils down to putting a record on your turntable, turning on your mixer and scratching. Plain and simple. Although not always easy!

What do you think would happen if you deliberately practiced for 30 minutes every single day? How about an hour? How about 2? Let alone 8!!!

Think free form expression. Experiment. Throw away the map.

Why don’t we stop searching for some mystical shortcut to becoming great at scratching and just keep scratching?

You can apply this to any skill not just scratching.

Have fun.

Happy Scratching! 😀
