Joe Cooley Scratch Tutorial

March 8, 2012

Today I would like to show you how to do a funky little scratch named the “Joe Cooley” scratch. Named after the DJ that invented it.

It is a pretty old school scratch that actually never gets old and always adds funk to whatever sample you are scratching.

I am using Beat #1 – Glide to the slide from Stay Cool – Beats for Scratch Practice Volume 4 which you can is available here. I am also using the vinyl Superseal by Dirtstyle / Thudrumble.

Video Tutorial

  1. Start with the fader open
  2. Push the record forwards
  3. Pull the record back in 2 parts (tear)
  4. Do 3 chirps in succession
  5. Repeat!

Scratch notation

Here is a scratch notation to help you break it down even further:

Hope you have fun with it!

Happy Scratching! 😀
