Go Ashley! Well done for showing up everyday, sticking with the process and for the progress you have made! It was really great to have you with us!
You can watch all of Ashley’s 100 Day videos here: instagram.com/dj_i_cious/
Ashley joins fellow School of Scratch Students Erick, Magnus, Roly G, Denise, Adam, Thomas and Rosa who have all completed the 100 Days of Scratching project. What a crew!
It’s something I undertook myself (see here) and have been encouraging my students to do the same – as a way to get in the habit of daily practice, documenting progress and connecting with others.
I asked Ashley some questions to help you if you are thinking of doing the project.
Interview
Hey Ashley! Can you give us some background on your interest in music and scratching?
I picked up Djing as a hobby about 6 years ago, played a bit of piano during my teenage years.
What made you decide to undertake the 100 day challenge?
Thought I’d give it a try to see my progress as well and break the monotony of my practice sessions.
What was your approach?
I didn’t have any specific approach, for me once I commit i’m all in.
What are your top tools / apps / software / equipment to capture and edit?
I used my android phone to video record and an app called power director to edit.
What did you learn?
I learned to leave it alone when I was not feeling it and come back to it at a later time.
What were some of the highlights for you?
A DJ asked me for advice about scratching because he was struggling and I thought to myself me giving someone advice about scratching I don’t think i’m on that level, I did help the best that I could.
What helped you on your way?
Looking at DJs like Thomas Colinet and his vocal scratching Dj skul and svn starr with there fasthand work as well as DJ Nyce and her improvement each session did inspire and help me to try and be better each session.
What didn’t work?
Planning a scratch routine did not help. I had to scrap the idea many times and just go with the flow of the music.
What was the most challenging part and how did you deal with that?
Being able to flow was a challenge but I decided by the end of the project I wanted to be able to flow for a minute. I would come up with a combo or vocal selection and go through my selection of songs to see which fits the best and build upon it.
What are your top tips for anyone who wants to undertake this challenge?
Be yourself each individual has a unique feel and style based on there personality.
Be the best you can be and embrace the process.
Continue to build upon what you have learned you’ll not be good at every scratch.
Only you will know your strength and weaknesses.
If you were to do this challenge again, what, if anything would you do differently?
As long as I commit I’m all in that’s always my approach and wanting to do better than the last time.
You are a School of Scratch student. What has your school experience been like?
Where I am now is because of the School of Scratch. My scratching really took a turn for the better after becoming a member. I like the community where you can always get help, as well as interactions by members, the video tutorials are awesome and easy to learn because Emma breaks it down for you.
It’s the best online scratch school investment you can make as well as being cost friendly, I was skeptical at first to join knowing my experience with other schools but I read one of her blogs and that sold me and I became a member.
What is next for you?
I’m back on the turntables, practicing and keeping the momentum going.
Where can we find you online?
I’m a Sport Performance Coach / Private trainer and you can connect with me on Instagram at @nexgenperformancetraining.
That’s a wrap!
Thanks Ashley! Well done again for taking part and completing this challenge! You are a 100 Days of Scratching Graduate.
