Today we are celebrating School of Scratch Student Julian aka Reload One from Germany, who recently completed the 100 days of scratching challenge. ??❤️
Huge congrats Julian! Props for showing up, sharing your cuts with us and inspiring others! It really was a daily operation!
I asked Julian some questions to help those of you who are considering doing the 100 Days of Scratching Project.
Interview
Hey Julian! Can you give us some background on your interest in music and scratching?
I´m into hip hop music and culture for over two decades. I was always a huge fan of DJing and turntablism in particular but never really focused on it. I was starting DJing serveral times in the last years but never invested enough time to move forward. Since 2014 I got back with DJing and especially scratching and I’m pretty active recently.
What made you decide to undertake the 100 day challenge?
I wanted to focus more on learning and incorporating techniques I was able to perform and most of all learn some new ones. I also love idea to practice on a regular/daily basis.
What was your approach?
Basically I just wanted to make it to the finish line. I just started. After a while I focused on the techniques I was practicing at the time. It was really important to me to use a lot of different loopers/beats and try to catch up with the new releases. Big up tablebeats!
What is your recording and posting workflow like?
I usually used an external webcam and the audio interface of my S9 mixer. Software wise I used quicktime player, because it’s easy to use and allows you to record the visuals form the cam and the audio from the S9 at the same time. So you just have to trim your clip and you’re good to go. For uploading I used dropbox app or airdrop to get the files on my iPhone and upload it to insta. Dropbox app also has a share option to upload driectly to insta from the cloud.
Top tools / apps / software / equipment to capture and edit?
schoolofscratch.com, Webcam, QuickTime, iMovie, GoPro Hero 4, DJM S9, Serato DJ, Tablebeats app, Dropbox app, Airdrop, GoPro app, Ableton Lite 10, Technics 1200 mk2, Numark pt01 usb, Raiden RXI-F2, Peruvian Killerfader, Vestax PDX 2000, Vestax PMC-05 II
What did you learn?
New scratch techniques like Boomerang, OG Flare, A6, Mirror Flare etc. – still a lot of room for improvement. I was able to clean up and strenghten techniques I was already able to perform. I was also able to improve my flow and being more experienced while performing in front of others.
What were some of the highlights for you?
Definately my 100th day where I tried to record my first routine. But there were some videos I was really stoked about because I was able to perform something new or just doing my cuts clean and in flow. I also loved the videos I made on vacation in Thailand.
What helped you on your way?
The feedback of the community especially from the SoS fam.
What didn’t work?
Being consistent and posting a video everyday in 100 days. I had to do some cheat days. It took me more than 100 days to finish the project but I´m still proud and happy about the project.
What are your top tips for anyone who wants to undertake this challenge?
Just get started. Ever issue and barrier will get sorted out on the way easily. Don´t think about what could go wrong like I did before I finally started the project.
What was the most challenging part and how did you deal with that?
To post/produce a video everyday besides having a busy schedule at work and playing at events on the weekends. I just kept going even I missed some days.
What are your top tips for anyone who wants to undertake this challenge?
Just get started and enjoy the ride.
If you were to do this challenge again, what, if anything would you do differently?
Trying to be more consistent.
You are a School of Scratch student. What has your school experience been like?
It´s just awesome. The community is very helpful and supportive. The tutorials are really detailed and very comprehensible for me. I would highly recommend to everyone who is interested in scratching to join because they will most likely benefit a lot from it.
What is next for you?
I did a little break the last two weeks but I wanna continue the project trying to make it to day 200. In addition I want to focus more on juggling and trick mixing. I would also love to do a short mixtape every two weeks. But let´s see if I can reconcile all the three projects at the same time.

About 100 Days of Scratching
100 Days of Scratching is a project I started and completed (see here) and have been encouraging my students to do the same – as a way to get in the habit of daily practice, documenting progress and connecting with others.
Julian joins fellow School of Scratch Students Crystal, Smallimus, Allexia, Thomas, Ashley, Adam, Erick, Magnus, Roly G and Denise who have all completed the 100 Days of Scratching project. What an amazing crew of creators!
