In this post I am sharing a scratch combo / pattern and a breakdown with you.
If you are beginner and this doesn’t make any sense, do check out my getting started series of free tutorials to help you learn the basics.
The pattern
Here is the pattern so you can hear what it sounds like.
Here are the video breakdowns in 3 parts. If you can do forwards, reverse, slice, dice and 2 click flare scratches, you have what you need to start practicing this combo.

Part 3
Closing thoughts on how I created this combo and how I work out what I am doing.
The scratch patterns and combos just sorta come through me unconsciously. It’s even a surprise to me. It’s like, wow, what was that? Let’s see if and do that again then unpack what I actually did, consciously.
Scratches I am using in this pattern
Click each scratch to preview the lesson:
- Swing Flare

- 2 Reverse Dices (or a translice)
- Translice (Transformer Slice)
- Forward / Release
- Reverse
If you are not familiar with all the scratches I am doing in this combo pattern, you can play around with copying the timing and rhythm of with a simple baby scratch, moving the record back and forth to get the feel for it. Or keep reading – details at the bottom of this post for how you can learn with me.
Beat
You can get this beat as mp3 or vinyl here:

Here is the official video:
I looped up and instrumental section at the end of the track around 1:50 (it plays out longer in the mp3 version you can purchase.) I am not affiliated with Damu, I simply love his music.
