Today I cover the “Tear” scratch. Although I covered this briefly previously as part of the Joe Cooley scratch, this is a scratch that very much deserves it’s own tutorial and when you master it, will open up lots of possibilities.
I am using the “Snap” Beat from the “CloudFonk Promo EP“. I am also using the vinyl Superseal by Dirtstyle / Thudrumble.
Video Tutorial
To summarise
Reverse Tear
- Start with the fader open
- Push the record forwards
- Pull the record back in 2 parts (tear)
- Repeat!
Forward Tear
- Start with the fader open
- Push the record forward in 2 parts (tear)
- Pull the record back
- Repeat!
You can create your own combinations and tear as many times forward and back as you wish!
Advanced scratchers can try flaring over each tear part. More on that in a later tutorial.
Scratch notation
Here is a scratch notation to help you break it down even further:

P.S – I used my new Canon 600D for this tutorial – hopefully you can see the difference in the video detail!
